The Wood family learns to celebrate Christmas when they moved to Wisconsin. In the rediscovery of the Christmas celebration they created a celebration of American diversity -- a melding of Scandinavian and Germanic customs. This is an entertaining collection of remembrances of Christmas trees, gifts and giving, food and recipes, of preparations and parties -- all from one of the best story tellers around. When the celebration is over Dave and Ruth collapse into separate heaps, proclaiming, "we will never do a Christmas like that again." The first time they made that pledge was twenty years ago. They are hooked on the holiday!
After many years teaching British literature at colleges and universities in the Midwest, Dave Wood began a second career as a columnist for the Minneapolis Tribune and for several Midwestern magazines, including Grit, the national family magazine. He is the author of several books. In 1974 and 1999, he received the first place award from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for Best Local Column. He is a past vice-president of the National Book Critics Circle and writes a weekly syndicated column, Dave Wood's Book Report.
