Deliver Us from Evil
|
A Manual of Exorcism
Phillip Gagnon
|
This book provides a balanced approach to exorcism and the demonic. This is a helpful instrument of pastoral care for such times when a pastor encounters the need for performing an exorcism. Pastor Gagnon explores the scriptural and early Church background and response to the demonic, pastoral discernment and the use of the sacraments in relation to exorcism. Included are two rites of renunciation, three rites of exorcism, and the exorcism and blessing of a dwelling. Additional prayers and blessings are included as helps in the battle.
The book also serves as an instruction for being alert to the manifold ways in which evil may work in the human heart. Phillip Gagnon's interest in the cults and the demonic began during his years as a youth worker at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Stony Plain, Alberta. During his undergraduate years at The King's College and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, he worked with families struggling with members who were involved with various pseudo-Christian, New Age, and Wiccan groups. In 1990 he was called to become the chair of a counter-cult group, Christian Challenge Ministries. He has spoken in many churches in Canada on the topic of cults and was invited to Seoul, South Korea, in 1992 to help the Korean church form their counter-cult ministry. While at the seminary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he was encourgaed by a professor to expand a paper to become Deliver Us From Evil. During his years as a parish pastor he has continued working in the area of incarnational apologetics vis-a-vis cults. He presently serves a congregation in St. Alberta, Alberta, Canada.
