Drinking the Wind

Jon Arensen

Drinking the Wind is Jon Arensen’s account of his encounter with the African continent. Arriving in Tanganyika with his parents in 1946, he grew up in the bush by Lake Victoria. Jon learned Kisukuma before he spoke English. He loved the outdoors and his shooting skills as a young boy helped feed the family. But an idyllic childhood in the wilds of Africa couldn’t last forever and he went off to boarding school in Kenya to study and learn more about the wider world. After completing university in the USA, Jon returned to Africa as a teacher at Rift Valley Academy before moving to southern Sudan in 1976. He and his wife Barb surveyed the languages of southern Sudan for the Education Ministry before settling among the Murle people at Pibor Post where they learned the language and translated the Bible into the Murle language. The author's love for Africa oozes from every page of this book and his adventures of all kinds create an exciting memoir of a life lived in Africa.

READERS WRITE:

This is a book you start and can hardly put down. Underneath one fantastic story after another are revealed several strong loves and passions -- love of father, love for an amazingly devoted wife, and a passion for African wildlife and especially his Murle friends. What an incredible and enjoyable read.

You are going to truly enjoy this book. You will be transported to a romantic East Africa, where you will be sipping delicious tea made on the open fire with the sounds of hyenas and lions off in the distance. Be careful reading it though you might be motivated to buy a ticket to East Africa to seek the adventure, romance, and beauty described in Dr. Arensen's accounts.
