I Count My Blessings

Each Day Is a Gift, a Blessing, a Connection

Eunice Norby Simonson

“A police post at the Tanganyika border cleared us. We were in the land to which God had called us. As we moved across the plains, Mt. Kilimanjaro came into view, majestic and spectacular. My entire being was in awe. Herds of Zebra, some ostrich, and other new creatures delighted the children.”

The thought of going to Africa was planted in Eunice Simonson’s head at a very young age by the legendary Richard Reusch. She met David Simonson at Concordia College and they married. She went to nursing school and he went to the seminary where he also met the legendary missionary to the Maasai. When he developed the same dream the young couple knew they were called to Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and the Maasai people. For nearly 50 years they preached the Gospel, healed the sick, and raised a family of five children. They founded Operation Bootstrap to raise money to build more than 3000 schools for Tanzanian children. They initiated efforts to build a hospital and started a girls’ school. They barnstormed back and forth across the United States publicizing their ministry and raising money.

And Eunice Simonson met every challenge head-on, without fear, counting every day as a blessing. This is her story, her account of the blessings of her 80 years which took her from a parsonage in North Dakota to Tanzania. They were years in which she made many connections to people and places, each of which holds a value in her heart.
