Seppel and the Secret of the Wartburg Castle

In May 1521, Wittenberg professor Luther was captured by horsemen in the Thuringian Forest and taken to the Wartburg Castle. This “friendly abduction” had been masterminded by Spalatin, secretary to Duke Frederick of Saxony, in order to protect the outlawed monk from his enemies. The warden of the Wartburg, Hans von Berlepsch, served as Luther’s guardian during ten months of exile. Disguised as a knight, Luther corresponded frequently with friends and colleagues, sometimes referring to his hiding-place as the “kingdom of the birds.” In the strategy to keep the knight's identity a secret a boy named Seppel is recruited to serve as his page. Seppel provides the narrative structure of this exciting historical fiction.
In the pages of this book you can walk the passages of the Wartburg Castle with Martin Luther. You will be amazed at the speed with which he translates the New Testament. Hilda has done her research carefully.
