Linka's Diary
|
A Norwegian Immigrant Story in Word and Sketches
Marvin Slind & Gracia Grindal, Editors
|
Caroline Dorothea Margarethe Keyser, known as Linka, married Hermann Amberg Preus in 1851. That same year they emigrated to Spring Prairie, Wisconsin. Before she emigrated Link's circle of family and friends included some of the most prominent individuals in Norwegian society. Her diary, in both text and sketches, captures her involvement in her Norway community, her marriage to Hermann Preus, her travel to America, and her life as a pastor's wife and a mother.
Marvin G.Slind completed this new translation of the Linka Preus diary in collaboration with Eva-Kristn Urestad Peterson and Ragnhild Hjeltness.
Dr. Slind is associate professor of history at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, where he teaches courses in Scandinavian history, Scandinavian immigration history, and the Vikings.
Linka Preus also documented moments and activities in her life with sketches, a skill she learned as a girl in Norway. Dr. Gracia Grindal, through research in the Preus' family letters and papers, provides commentary to the sketches; reconstructing a significant piece of the Preus family history.
Dr. Grindal is professor of rhetoric at Luther Seminary, Saint Paul, Minnesota. She has published many articles on the history of Scandinavian-American Lutheran hymnody, and the women of the Norwegian-American Lutheran churches.
