A reviewer for the Ben Franklin Awards comments on the design of the book: Osmo Vänskä is a textbook-perfect design. Both elegant and smart, everything is perfect. The photographs are beautiful and wonderfully reproduced. The paper is exquisite. The choice of typefaces is excellent and easy to read.
Chapter openings are extremely well done; I was especially taken with the
oversized and opaque first letter as well as the choice of font for the titles. White
space was generous and the layouts of text and images wonderful.
This book is for anyone who is interested in a behind-the-scenes look at a major symphony orchestra. It is an introduction to a music culture that extends around the world. Michael Anthony probes that world and gives voice to Osmo Vänskä as he works with the Minnesota Orchestra and receives acclaim on the stages of the world.
Osmo Vänskä, Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra, has achieved international acclaim for his intense and dynamic performances and his compelling interpretations of standard repertoires.
Before coming to Minnesota Mr. Vänskä built the small Finnish regional ensemble of Lahti into an internationally recognized orchestra. At the same time he was chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Turku Symphony. The accolades have been effusive for his leadership of the Minnesota Orchestra, both in home concerts and in tour concerts that have put him on the stages of the world music capitals. He has repeatedly been invited as guest conductor with the major American and European orchestras.
With text from Michael Anthony, a 20 year veteran music reviewer with the Minneapolis StarTribune, the book achieves a musical and documentary integrity. Action photography by music photographer Greg Helgeson and portrait photography by Ann Marsden add the several “thousand words” to complete this unique biography.
