Poetic Interpretations from the Hebrew Scriptures aka the Old Testament
Dierdre Luzwick
|
The author has chosen a poetic form to retell some of the familiar stories of the Old Testament a.k.a. the Hebrew Scriptures. Both the rhyming poetic form and the content of Ms. Luzwick's poems demystify the familiar stories. As retold in this book, the stories point to the humanness of the people with whom God made a covenant and, while pointing up the foibles of the humans, reveal the grace and mercy of God. This brilliant tour-de-force will have teens and their parents running to their Bibles, asking: does Scripture really say that?
Of Abraham's encounter with God, come to announce that Sarah would have a child, Dierdre writes: One fine day in October, Abe was strolling his estate, And as he turned to bend, he saw three strangers at his gate. "Hallooo!" he waved, and beckoned them--the strangers gave a nod; But as the men approached, he gasped--for one of them was God! "Your Honor!" Abe exlaimed and bowed. "My goodness...I declare!" He brushed his dusty shoes and coat, then finger combed his hair. . . .
. . . No sooner had Jehovah brought conclusion to his speech, When raucous laughter filled the gap, which followed in its breech; For, in the house, old Sarah who had overhead the Lord, First started to giggle, then she laughed, and in the end, she roared!. . .
. . . "Just look at me," Sarah said to Abe, "I'm eighty-nine years old! I have arthritis in the back, My feet are always cold. My hearing is plain awful And without my specs I'm blind. To say the least," she said, "I find this pregnancy unkind!". . .
Born and raised in Chicago during the 1940's, Diedre Luzwick is both a visionary philosopher and social critic, focusing her haunting imagery upon the most modern aspects -- and ancient roots -- of western civilization. Largely self-taught, Luzwick presently lives in the small rural Wisconsin town of Cambridge. Her zeal for biblical scholarship was fueled while attending Ripon College as a philosophy major.
